Spring Cleaning at the Showalters

With the weather warming up and flowers abloom all around us, we ventured outside to do some light spring cleaning like clearing out the window wells and shoveling out the roof gutters...

Joo got lots of hands-on experience such as painting all of our outside chairs...
Dad got rid of all our family secrets in a fire while I supervised.
Joo and I held down the fort while Mom and Dad went out to Arizona to visit Heather for a week- they spent a lot of the time watching the Cleveland Indians spring training, but also plenty of time at some of Heather's favorite dives, and even an eloquent tea house which was a dress-up affair.
They were priveleged to witness the cactus in front of Heather's home blossom for its one glorious time every 20 years...

Meanwhile, we had loads of fun playing frisbee, tennis, doing yoga, watching the plants, etc.

Joo even finally took the huge plunge to make her life in America sustainable by starting her first batch of kim-chi. It's difficult to explain the importance of this, but one quick example is that nearly every Korean household has two refrigerators - one normal, and one especially reserved for kim-chi. We won't know how it turns out for awhile because it has to ferment and age for quite some time before it's ripe for the eating...
